Watching a Lion Do Cartwheels

We trick ourselves into seeing
all the things we want to see
because it makes us feel
better about our singular place
in the spectrum of the universe

The mirror is an image that
we want ourselves to be or
an image of a lost soul
when we have been found
for every day of every year

Maybe we watch too much
and do far too little to even
be concerned about what
is going on inside of our
basement-level window

I don’t know where I fall
as I watch myself idle
through life with that
weighted vest you saw
on Amazon on my back

I think I would just prefer
to think differently and
to spend the rest of my
days on this troubled planet
watching a lion do cartwheels
