Grabbing At Air

Bob loses his job and
drinks his desk vodka
before driving home
and avoiding a deer
prancing across
the lamp-lit road

Jamie walks in on
her husband and
the local masseuse
and gasps, even
though the evidence
had been staring
at her for months

Carl eats his Taco Bell
alone in the parking lot
while a tornado alert
blares through his
Bluetooth, interrupting
his podcast on how
to live a better life

Elaine won’t let her
daughter use the
iPad at the table,
but then Elaine
keeps looking at
her phone because
she is the adult

I walk aimlessly
to drumbeat my
inexorable grief
and I always end
up back where I
started; home
